stent thrombosis
Formation of blood clot within or adjacent to a previously implanted coronary stent, potentially leading to acute vessel occlusion and myocardial infarction.
Full Definition
Stent thrombosis (ST) is a serious complication following percutaneous coronary intervention that involves thrombus formation within the stent structure, leading to acute or subacute vessel occlusion. The Academic Research Consortium (ARC) has established standardized definitions based on timing: acute (<24 hours), subacute (1-30 days), late (30 days-1 year), and very late (>1 year). Stent thrombosis classification also includes definite (angiographically confirmed), probable (unexplained death or MI in target vessel territory), and possible (unexplained death) categories. Risk factors include premature antiplatelet therapy discontinuation, stent malapposition, and certain patient characteristics. Stent thrombosis rates are critical safety endpoints in cardiovascular device trials.
Usage
Usage note: Specify timing classification (acute, subacute, late, very late) and certainty level (definite, probable, possible) when reporting.
