IABP
Also written as: IABP — Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump
Intra-aortic balloon pump, a mechanical circulatory support device used to augment cardiac output and coronary perfusion.
Full Definition
The intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) is a temporary mechanical circulatory support device consisting of a balloon catheter placed in the descending aorta. The balloon inflates during diastole to increase coronary artery perfusion and deflates during systole to reduce afterload and improve cardiac output. Timing is synchronized with the cardiac cycle using ECG or arterial pressure waveforms. IABP is commonly used in cardiogenic shock, high-risk percutaneous coronary intervention, or as a bridge to more definitive therapy. Contraindications include severe aortic regurgitation and aortic dissection.
Usage
Usage note: Write as IABP in all caps, not iabp or Iabp.
