VAD
Pronunciation: vad
Also written as: VAD — ventricular assist device
Ventricular assist device providing mechanical circulatory support for patients with severe heart failure.
Full Definition
VAD (ventricular assist device) is a mechanical pump designed to support or replace the function of a failing heart ventricle. These devices can provide left ventricular support (LVAD), right ventricular support (RVAD), or biventricular support (BiVAD). VADs are used as bridge to transplantation, bridge to recovery, destination therapy, or bridge to decision in patients with end-stage heart failure. Modern devices are typically continuous-flow pumps that are surgically implanted with inflow from the ventricle and outflow to the aorta or pulmonary artery. VAD therapy requires comprehensive team management including surgical, cardiology, and specialized nursing expertise.
Usage
Usage note: Specify LVAD, RVAD, or BiVAD when the configuration is clinically relevant.
