ventricular assist device

Mechanical circulatory support system that assists or replaces the pumping function of a failing ventricle.

Full Definition

A ventricular assist device is a sophisticated mechanical pump designed to support or replace the function of a failing ventricle in patients with severe heart failure. These devices can provide left ventricular assist (LVAD), right ventricular assist (RVAD), or biventricular support. VADs serve as bridge-to-transplant, bridge-to-recovery, or destination therapy in patients who are not transplant candidates. Surgical implantation requires careful patient selection, extensive preoperative evaluation, and specialized postoperative management including anticoagulation protocols.

Usage

Usage note: Commonly abbreviated as VAD in clinical documentation.
