Benign Rolandic Epilepsy

A childhood epilepsy syndrome characterized by seizures originating from the rolandic cortex, typically occurring during sleep.

Full Definition

Benign Rolandic Epilepsy (BRE) is the most common focal epilepsy syndrome in children, characterized by brief focal seizures with orofacial motor symptoms and speech arrest. Seizures typically occur during sleep and have a characteristic EEG pattern with centrotemporal spikes. The condition generally has an excellent prognosis with spontaneous resolution by adolescence, though some children may experience transient cognitive or language difficulties.
