Continuous spike-and-wave during sleep (CSWS) is an age-related epileptic encephalopathy characterized by abundant spike-and-wave complexes occupying more than 85% of non-REM sleep. This pattern typically emerges between ages 2-12 years and is associated with cognitive decline, behavioral problems, and various seizure types. The continuous electrical activity disrupts normal sleep architecture and interferes with memory consolidation. Treatment aims to suppress the abnormal EEG pattern to prevent further cognitive deterioration.
