Startle epilepsy, also known as reflex epilepsy or stimulus-sensitive epilepsy, is characterized by seizures that are consistently precipitated by sudden, unexpected sensory stimuli. Common triggers include sudden loud sounds, unexpected touch, bright lights, or visual stimuli. The seizures typically occur within seconds of the triggering stimulus and may range from brief myoclonic jerks to generalized tonic-clonic seizures. This condition can be seen in various contexts including symptomatic epilepsy following brain injury, genetic syndromes, or as part of progressive myoclonus epilepsies. Management involves both antiepileptic medications and stimulus avoidance strategies when possible.
