Full Definition

A nerve conduction study (NCS) is an electrodiagnostic procedure that measures the speed and amplitude of electrical impulses as they travel along peripheral nerves. The test involves stimulating nerves with small electrical pulses and recording responses from muscles or sensory receptors to assess nerve function and detect abnormalities such as neuropathy, nerve compression, or demyelination. NCS is typically performed in conjunction with electromyography (EMG) to provide comprehensive evaluation of the peripheral nervous system. The study can differentiate between axonal damage and demyelinating processes, localize sites of nerve injury, and monitor disease progression or treatment response.
