Full Definition

Benign epileptiform transients of sleep (BETS), also known as small sharp spikes (SSS), are normal variant EEG findings that occur during drowsiness and light sleep. These brief, low-amplitude sharp waves typically appear in the temporal regions and may be unilateral or bilateral. Despite their epileptiform appearance, BETS are not associated with seizures or epilepsy and are considered a benign finding. They are distinguished from pathological sharp waves by their characteristic morphology, temporal distribution, and occurrence exclusively during sleep states. Recognition of BETS is important to avoid misdiagnosis of epilepsy and unnecessary treatment.
