Spurious activation of adjacent muscles during selective nerve stimulation due to current spread or volume conduction.

Full Definition

Crosstalk, also known as cross-innervation or spread of activation, occurs when electrical stimulation intended for one nerve or muscle inadvertently activates adjacent neural structures. This phenomenon can occur due to current spread from high-intensity stimulation, anatomical variants in nerve pathways, or volume conduction through tissues. Crosstalk is problematic in nerve conduction studies as it can lead to falsely normal results when the intended nerve is actually damaged but responses are recorded from unintended muscles. Recognition and avoidance of crosstalk is essential for accurate neurophysiological interpretation.
