Full Definition

An electroretinogram (ERG) is a neurophysiological test that measures the electrical responses generated by neural and non-neural cells in the retina when stimulated by light. The test involves placing electrodes on or near the eye and recording the electrical activity in response to flashes of light of varying intensities and frequencies. ERG is crucial for diagnosing retinal disorders, hereditary retinal dystrophies, and monitoring retinal toxicity from medications. The test provides information about the function of different retinal cell layers including photoreceptors, bipolar cells, and ganglion cells. Different ERG protocols can isolate rod versus cone function.
