epileptiform discharge

Abnormal EEG waveforms resembling epileptic activity, including spikes, sharp waves, and spike-wave complexes.

Full Definition

Epileptiform discharges are abnormal electrical patterns recorded on EEG that morphologically resemble the electrical activity seen during seizures. These discharges include spikes (duration <70ms), sharp waves (70-200ms), and various spike-wave complexes. They may occur between seizures (interictal) or during seizures (ictal). Editorial staff should understand that not all epileptiform activity indicates epilepsy; some patterns are benign variants. The term requires careful distinction from 'epileptic discharge,' which specifically refers to seizure-related activity.

Usage

Usage note: Use 'epileptiform' (not 'epileptic') when describing EEG patterns that resemble but are not necessarily seizure activity.

In Context

  • "Focal epileptiform discharges were noted over the left temporal region during the routine EEG." — EEG interpretation report
  • "The patient showed frequent epileptiform discharges without clinical correlation." — Clinical assessment
