Evoked potentials (EPs) are electrical responses of the nervous system to specific sensory stimuli, measured using surface electrodes placed over relevant anatomical regions. These tests evaluate the integrity and function of sensory pathways from peripheral receptors through the spinal cord to the brain cortex. The three main types are visual evoked potentials (VEPs), auditory brainstem responses (ABRs), and somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs). Evoked potential studies are valuable for detecting subclinical lesions, monitoring disease progression in conditions like multiple sclerosis, and assessing neurological function during surgical procedures. The amplitude, latency, and morphology of responses provide diagnostic information about pathway integrity.
