Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) involves the real-time assessment of nervous system function during surgical procedures that place neural structures at risk. This specialized field combines various neurophysiological techniques including EEG, EMG, somatosensory evoked potentials, motor evoked potentials, and auditory evoked potentials depending on the surgical procedure and anatomical structures at risk. IONM aims to detect neural compromise early enough to allow corrective action, thereby reducing the risk of postoperative neurological deficits. Common applications include spinal surgery, brain tumor resection, carotid endarterectomy, and cranial nerve procedures. The monitoring requires specialized equipment and trained neurophysiologists working closely with the surgical team.
