Full Definition

Photic driving refers to the normal physiological response where EEG rhythms synchronize with the frequency of intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) during routine EEG testing. This response typically occurs at flash frequencies between 8-20 Hz and appears as rhythmic activity that follows the stimulation frequency. Photic driving is considered a normal finding and indicates intact visual pathways and cortical responsiveness. Clinical editors should distinguish this normal response from photoparoxysmal responses, which are abnormal epileptiform discharges triggered by light stimulation. The presence of good photic driving often indicates normal brain function and alertness.
