SEP

A neurophysiological test measuring electrical activity in the brain in response to touch or vibration stimuli.

Full Definition

Somatosensory evoked potentials are electrical responses recorded from the nervous system following stimulation of peripheral sensory nerves. The test evaluates the integrity of sensory pathways from the peripheral nerve to the brain cortex. SEPs are commonly used to assess spinal cord function during surgery and to diagnose neurological conditions affecting sensory pathways. The responses are typically recorded from electrodes placed over the scalp, cervical spine, and peripheral nerves.
