Full Definition

Sleep architecture refers to the overall structure and cyclical pattern of sleep stages as recorded and analyzed during polysomnography studies. Normal sleep architecture consists of alternating periods of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, divided into stages N1, N2, and N3, and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, which typically cycle every 90-120 minutes throughout the night. Sleep architecture analysis includes measurement of total sleep time, sleep efficiency, REM latency, and the percentage of time spent in each sleep stage. Disrupted sleep architecture can indicate various sleep disorders, medical conditions, or the effects of medications. Changes in sleep architecture patterns are used diagnostically to identify conditions such as sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, depression, and other disorders affecting sleep quality and structure.
