Theta rhythm refers to EEG activity in the 4-8 Hz frequency range. In normal circumstances, theta activity is seen predominantly in children, during drowsiness and light sleep in adults, and in certain meditative states. However, excessive theta activity in alert adults, particularly when generalized, may indicate cerebral dysfunction, metabolic disorders, or medication effects. Focal theta activity can suggest underlying structural abnormalities. Clinical editors should note that the interpretation of theta rhythm heavily depends on the patient's age, state of consciousness, and clinical context.
