Spinal Cord Independence Measure

A validated functional outcome scale specifically designed to assess independence in individuals with spinal cord injury, covering self-care, respiration, sphincter management, and mobility domains.

Full Definition

The Spinal Cord Independence Measure (SCIM) was developed to address limitations of generic functional scales—such as the Functional Independence Measure—when applied to spinal cord injury populations. The third version (SCIM III) is the most widely adopted and includes 19 items grouped into three subscales: self-care, respiration and sphincter management, and mobility. Total scores range from 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating greater independence. Editors should distinguish SCIM from ASIA Impairment Scale, which classifies neurological injury level rather than functional independence.

Usage note: Abbreviate as SCIM after first use. Specify version (e.g., SCIM III) when the version number is clinically relevant. Do not conflate with neurological classification tools.
