alien hand syndrome

Neurological disorder where one hand performs purposeful movements without conscious control or intention.

Full Definition

Alien hand syndrome is a rare neurological condition characterized by involuntary, purposeful movements of one hand that occur without the patient's conscious intention or control. The affected hand may perform complex activities such as unbuttoning clothes, reaching for objects, or interfering with the actions of the normal hand. This syndrome typically results from lesions affecting the corpus callosum, anterior cingulate cortex, or supplementary motor area. Patients retain normal sensation and strength in the affected limb but report feeling that the hand belongs to someone else or has a mind of its own.
