Arterial Switch Operation

A surgical procedure to correct transposition of the great arteries by switching the positions of the aorta and pulmonary artery.

Full Definition

The Arterial Switch Operation (ASO) is the preferred surgical treatment for transposition of the great arteries, typically performed within the first few months of life. This complex procedure involves detaching both the aorta and pulmonary artery from their abnormal positions and reattaching them to their correct ventricles. The coronary arteries must also be carefully transferred to ensure adequate blood supply to the heart muscle. When performed early, this operation restores normal cardiovascular anatomy and physiology, allowing for excellent long-term outcomes.

Usage

Usage note: Abbreviated as ASO. Distinguish from atrial switch procedures (Mustard/Senning) which are older techniques.
