A rare congenital heart syndrome consisting of multiple left-sided obstructive lesions affecting the mitral valve, left ventricle, aortic valve, and aortic arch.

Full Definition

Shone complex is a rare congenital heart syndrome characterized by a spectrum of left-sided obstructive lesions that were originally described as four components: supravalvular mitral ring, parachute mitral valve, subaortic stenosis, and coarctation of the aorta. The condition represents a developmental field defect affecting the left side of the heart during embryogenesis. Patients may present with varying combinations and severities of these lesions, and the clinical presentation depends on the degree of obstruction at each level. The syndrome is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, often requiring multiple staged surgical interventions throughout childhood and adulthood. Some cases may progress to require heart transplantation.
