Single Ventricle Physiology

A group of complex congenital heart defects where only one ventricle is capable of supporting circulation to both the body and lungs.

Full Definition

Single Ventricle Physiology encompasses a variety of complex congenital heart defects in which only one ventricle is adequately developed to support systemic circulation. These conditions include hypoplastic left heart syndrome, tricuspid atresia, double inlet left ventricle, and other complex anomalies. Patients with single ventricle physiology typically require staged surgical palliation, ultimately leading to Fontan circulation where systemic venous return flows directly to the lungs without ventricular pumping. This unique physiology presents lifelong challenges and requires specialized multidisciplinary care.
