Unifocalization is a complex surgical procedure used in congenital heart surgery to connect disparate pulmonary artery segments and collateral vessels into a single, unified pulmonary arterial system. This technique is commonly employed in patients with pulmonary atresia or severe pulmonary stenosis where the native pulmonary arteries are discontinuous or hypoplastic. The procedure creates a central pulmonary artery that can then receive a conduit from the right ventricle or systemic circulation.
