Ventricular Assist Device

Also written as: VAD — Ventricular Assist Device

A mechanical pump that supports heart function in patients with severe ventricular dysfunction, used as bridge therapy or destination therapy.

Full Definition

A ventricular assist device (VAD) is a mechanical circulatory support device used in pediatric and adult patients with end-stage heart failure. In congenital cardiology, VADs may be employed as bridge-to-transplant therapy, bridge-to-recovery, or as destination therapy. These devices can support the left ventricle (LVAD), right ventricle (RVAD), or both ventricles (BiVAD). Placement requires careful consideration of anatomy, anticoagulation management, and long-term complications including infection, bleeding, and thromboembolic events.

Usage

Usage note: Commonly abbreviated as VAD in all contexts. Specify LVAD, RVAD, or BiVAD when referring to specific configurations.
