Zinc Sun Protection Factor

Full Definition

Sun protection factor (SPF) measures a sunscreen's ability to reduce UV-B exposure, but in cosmetic dermatology literature, the distinction between mineral (physical) SPF products—those using zinc oxide or titanium dioxide—and chemical SPF products is frequently noted. Zinc oxide provides broad-spectrum UV-A and UV-B protection by physically reflecting radiation rather than absorbing it. Editors will encounter SPF in product descriptions, post-procedure care sheets, and clinical recommendations. SPF should always be followed by a numeral (e.g., SPF 50), with no superscript or degree symbol. The abbreviation SPF should be spelled out on first use in formal documents.

Usage note: Write 'SPF 30' (not 'SPF-30' or 'SPF30') with a space between 'SPF' and the numeral. Distinguish mineral (zinc/titanium) from chemical sunscreens when precision is required.
