Inhalation Sedation

The administration of a sedative or anesthetic gas, most commonly nitrous oxide–oxygen, via inhalation to achieve a controlled state of reduced anxiety or consciousness.

Inhalation sedation in dentistry primarily refers to the use of nitrous oxide combined with oxygen delivered through a nasal hood or mask to produce minimal-to-moderate sedation. It is one of the most widely used techniques in pediatric and anxious-adult dental care due to its rapid onset, titrability, and quick recovery profile. The technique requires specific equipment including a continuous-flow anesthesia machine with fail-safe mechanisms, demand-valve delivery systems, and scavenging systems to minimize occupational exposure. In clinical documents and regulatory filings, inhalation sedation is distinguished from enteral (oral) and parenteral routes of administration. Editors should note that sevoflurane-based inhalation induction for general anesthesia is a separate concept, though both fall under the broader inhalation route.
