Guided Bone Regeneration; a surgical technique using barrier membranes to promote new bone growth in deficient areas prior to or concurrent with implant placement.

Full Definition

GBR is a bone-augmentation method derived from guided tissue regeneration (GTR) principles. It employs resorbable or non-resorbable membranes to exclude fast-proliferating epithelial and connective tissue cells from a bone defect, allowing slower-growing osteogenic cells to populate the space and form new bone. The technique is frequently combined with bone graft materials (autograft, allograft, xenograft, or alloplast). Editors should ensure GBR is expanded on first use and is not confused with GTR, which targets periodontal ligament and cementum regeneration rather than bone.
