Insertion Torque

The rotational force, measured in Newton-centimetres (Ncm), required to seat a dental implant fixture into prepared bone during surgical placement.

Full Definition

Insertion torque (IT) is an intraoperative measure of implant primary stability reflecting the friction between the implant threads and the surrounding bone walls. Higher values (e.g., ≥35 Ncm) are often associated with good primary stability and may indicate suitability for immediate loading protocols, while excessively high torque may risk bone necrosis. Editors should ensure that torque values are accompanied by the correct SI unit (Ncm, not N/cm or Nm). This metric is distinct from the post-placement ISQ reading.

Usage note: Units must be Ncm. Distinguish from removal torque, which assesses osseointegration after a healing period.
