ISQ

Also written as: ISQ — Implant Stability Quotient

Implant Stability Quotient; a dimensionless numerical scale (1–100) used to quantify implant stability via resonance frequency analysis.

Full Definition

ISQ is the unit of measurement produced by resonance frequency analysis (RFA) devices such as the Osstell instrument. It reflects the stiffness of the bone-implant interface and serves as a surrogate marker for osseointegration status. Values above 60–65 are generally associated with satisfactory primary or secondary stability, though thresholds vary by study protocol. Editors must ensure the acronym is introduced on first use with its full form and that ISQ values are reported with the measurement device specified. ISQ is always written in full caps.

Usage

Usage note: Always expanded on first use. Do not conflate with insertion torque, which measures mechanical resistance during placement rather than post-placement stability.

In Context

  • "An ISQ of 72 was recorded immediately post-placement, indicating high primary stability." — Clinical research protocol
  • "Authors should define ISQ on first mention and specify the RFA device used to obtain measurements." — Manuscript preparation guideline
