Peri-implant Mucositis
Pronunciation: peh-ree-im-plant myoo-koh-SY-tis
A reversible inflammatory lesion confined to the soft tissue surrounding a dental implant, with no evidence of supporting bone loss.
Full Definition
Peri-implant mucositis is considered the precursor to peri-implantitis and is analogous to gingivitis around natural teeth. It is characterised by bleeding on probing and visual inflammation of the peri-implant mucosa, but without radiographic bone loss beyond initial remodelling. Its reversibility upon effective plaque control distinguishes it clinically and editorially from peri-implantitis. Editors should hyphenate 'peri-implant' as a compound modifier and write 'mucositis' in lowercase.
Usage
Usage note: Hyphenate 'peri-implant' when used as a compound modifier. Do not conflate with peri-implantitis.
