emergence profile

The contour of a tooth or prosthesis as it transitions from the gingival margin or implant platform through the gingival sulcus to the visible crown surface.

Full Definition

Emergence profile describes the three-dimensional shape of a restoration or abutment as it exits the gingival tissue. A correctly designed emergence profile supports healthy periodontal tissues and prevents food impaction. In laboratory documentation and implant prosthetic reports, the term is used to specify the angle and curvature at which the prosthesis emerges from the soft tissue. Editors must recognize that 'emergence profile' is distinct from 'gingival contour,' which refers to the shape of the gingival tissues themselves, not the prosthesis.

Usage

Usage note: Do not confuse 'emergence profile' with 'gingival contour.' The former describes the prosthesis geometry; the latter describes the soft-tissue shape.

  • "An overcontoured emergence profile was noted in the technician's review notes and flagged for correction." — Laboratory Quality Review
