Marginal Integrity

The degree of adaptation and seal achieved at the interface between a dental restoration margin and the prepared tooth surface.

Full Definition

Marginal integrity is a clinical and laboratory quality indicator describing how completely a restoration margin contacts the tooth preparation without gap, overhang, or open margin. It is assessed by methods including dye penetration, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), with results typically reported as marginal gap width in micrometres. A clinically acceptable marginal gap is generally cited as ≤120 µm, though this threshold is debated. Poor marginal integrity predisposes restorations to microleakage, secondary caries, and periodontal irritation. Editors should distinguish 'marginal integrity' (the qualitative concept) from 'marginal gap' (the measurable dimensional quantity).

Usage note: 'Marginal integrity' and 'marginal adaptation' are often used interchangeably in the literature, but some authors distinguish them. Flag inconsistent usage within a single manuscript.
