A finger-like projection of cured adhesive resin that extends into a dentine tubule, contributing to micromechanical retention.

Resin tags form when low-viscosity adhesive resin infiltrates the open lumina of dentine tubules prior to polymerisation, creating interlocking projections that provide micromechanical retention to the bonding interface. Their length, density, and continuity are evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and are used as markers of adhesive penetration quality. However, contemporary research indicates that resin tags contribute less to overall bond strength than the interdiffusion zone (hybrid layer). Editors should avoid implying that longer resin tags automatically equate to stronger bonds, as this is a common oversimplification found in promotional materials.

Usage note: Do not use interchangeably with 'hybrid layer.' These are structurally and functionally distinct features of the bonding interface.
