Urethane dimethacrylate; a low-viscosity bifunctional monomer widely used in dental resin formulations as an alternative or supplement to Bis-GMA.

Full Definition

UDMA (urethane dimethacrylate) is a difunctional methacrylate monomer incorporated into dental composites, adhesives, and indirect resin restorative materials. Compared with Bis-GMA, UDMA has a lower molecular weight and does not contain a bisphenol-A moiety, making it relevant in biocompatibility discussions. Its lower viscosity allows formulators to reduce diluent monomer content, which can improve degree of conversion. Editors must expand the acronym on first use and note that UDMA is always rendered in full capitals. Confusing UDMA with HEMA is a documented editorial error in dental manuscripts.

Usage note: Always expand on first use as 'urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA)'. The acronym is styled in all capitals with no periods. Do not conflate with UEDMA, which is a different compound.
