Veneering Porcelain

A feldspathic or glass ceramic material layered over a structural substructure (metal or ceramic core) to provide aesthetic colour and translucency in dental prostheses.

Full Definition

Veneering porcelain is the aesthetic outer layer applied by dental technicians to a restoration's substructure, such as a metal framework or zirconia coping, to replicate the optical properties of natural tooth tissue. It is sintered in a dental furnace and requires careful coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) matching with the substructure to avoid delamination or chipping. Editors should distinguish 'veneering porcelain' from a 'porcelain veneer', which is a different clinical entity—a thin ceramic facing bonded directly to a minimally prepared tooth surface. The terms are frequently confused in lay-facing and clinical documents.
