Zinc Phosphate Cement

Zinc phosphate cement is one of the oldest and most extensively studied dental cements, consisting of a zinc oxide (with magnesium oxide) powder component and an aqueous phosphoric acid liquid component. The acid–base reaction produces zinc phosphate salt crystals, yielding a rigid set material. Its clinical applications include cementation of cast metal crowns, inlays, and orthodontic bands, as well as use as a cavity base or liner. Editors should note that its strongly acidic pH during setting (as low as 3.5) is a distinguishing clinical concern when discussing pulpal protection. It is not adhesive to tooth structure—a key editorial distinction from resin-based cements.
