Zirconia (zirconium dioxide, ZrO₂) is a polycrystalline ceramic that, when stabilised with yttria, exhibits exceptional flexural strength and fracture toughness, making it suitable for posterior fixed dental prostheses. In dental materials literature, editors will encounter several sub-types—monolithic zirconia, high-translucency zirconia, and ultra-low translucency zirconia—which have distinct properties and indications. The correct spelling is 'zirconia', not 'zirconium' (which refers to the metallic element).
