Gross Production

The total value of dental services rendered before any adjustments, discounts, or write-offs are applied, calculated at full fee-schedule rates.

Full Definition

Gross production is the sum of all dental services billed at the practice's full published fee-schedule rates within a given period, regardless of what is ultimately collected. It does not reflect contractual write-offs required under insurance agreements or any courtesy adjustments. In editorial contexts, gross production must be clearly differentiated from adjusted production and net collections, as misuse of these terms in financial documents can misrepresent a practice's revenue. The figure commonly appears in daily production reports, monthly KPI dashboards, and benchmarking analyses.

Usage

Usage note: Always qualify 'production' as gross or adjusted. Stand-alone 'production' is ambiguous in dental financial writing.

In Context

  • "The practice posted gross production of $310,000 in June, but adjusted production came to $248,000 after PPO write-offs." — Monthly KPI dashboard
  • "Authors must not substitute 'gross production' for 'collections' in the executive summary, as the two metrics serve different analytical purposes." — Editorial feedback on practice management white paper
