Guarantor
The individual legally responsible for paying a patient's dental account, who may or may not be the patient themselves.

In dental practice management, the guarantor is the person who holds financial responsibility for an account. For adult patients, the guarantor is typically the patient. For minors, the guarantor is usually a parent or legal guardian. In family accounts managed under a single record, one adult is typically designated the guarantor for all family members. Financial correspondence—statements, collection notices, financial agreements—is addressed to the guarantor, not necessarily to the patient. Editors must be precise in patient-communication templates: 'patient' and 'guarantor' are not synonymous, and using the wrong term can create legal ambiguity in financial and consent documents.
Usage
Usage note: In minor-patient contexts, always use 'guarantor' rather than 'patient' when referring to financial responsibility. Conflating the two can undermine the enforceability of financial agreements.
