Waiting Period

A defined period after enrolment during which a dental plan member is ineligible for certain covered services, commonly applied to major restorative or orthodontic benefits.

Full Definition

A waiting period is an insurance plan provision that delays benefit eligibility for specific categories of dental care—most often major restorative work (crowns, bridges, dentures) and orthodontic treatment—for a set duration after a policy becomes effective, typically 6 to 24 months. Waiting periods are used by carriers to reduce adverse selection. Editors reviewing plan documents, welcome letters, and benefits summaries must present waiting period information clearly and accurately, specifying which service categories are affected and when the clock begins. Confusion between a waiting period and a missing-tooth clause (a related but distinct exclusion) is a common editorial error. Some employer-group plans waive waiting periods for enrollees who can demonstrate prior continuous coverage.

Usage

Usage note: Always state the specific service category and duration when referencing a waiting period. Do not conflate with the missing-tooth clause, which excludes teeth already absent at enrolment rather than delaying coverage by time.

In Context

  • "The plan imposed a 12-month waiting period before major restorative benefits, including crowns and bridges, became payable." — Patient benefits summary document
  • "Editors must not substitute 'waiting period' for 'missing-tooth clause,' as the two provisions operate on different grounds for denial." — Insurance document editorial style guide
