Walkout Statement
A document printed and given to a patient at checkout that itemises the day's services, charges, payments made, and remaining balance.
Full Definition
A walkout statement is a point-of-service financial document generated by dental practice management software and handed to the patient as they leave the appointment. It lists each procedure performed that day using procedure codes and descriptions, the associated fees, any insurance payments or adjustments already applied, and the patient's outstanding balance. Unlike an explanation of benefits (EOB), the walkout statement is produced by the provider, not the insurer. Editors reviewing patient communication templates or billing guides must ensure the walkout statement is not referred to interchangeably with an invoice, receipt, or superbill, as each serves a distinct administrative purpose.
Usage
Usage note: Distinguish clearly from 'patient ledger,' which is the cumulative account history, and from 'EOB,' which is issued by the insurer, not the practice.
