CBCT
Also written as: CBCT — Cone Beam Computed Tomography
Cone Beam Computed Tomography; a three-dimensional dental imaging modality that produces volumetric data of the oral and maxillofacial structures.
Full Definition
CBCT stands for Cone Beam Computed Tomography and is the principal 3D imaging technology used in contemporary dental practice for implant planning, endodontic assessment, and orthodontic analysis. Unlike medical CT, CBCT uses a cone-shaped X-ray beam that rotates around the patient, producing a digital volume from which multiplanar reconstructions can be derived. Editors will encounter CBCT in radiology reports, implant planning documentation, and medicolegal records. The acronym should always be rendered in full caps. Editors must be careful not to confuse CBCT reports with conventional two-dimensional radiograph descriptions.
Usage
Usage note: Always expand at first mention in a document: 'Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT).' Thereafter the acronym alone is acceptable.
