Effective Dose

A radiation dosimetry value, expressed in millisieverts (mSv), representing the weighted sum of tissue-equivalent doses used to estimate overall radiation risk to a patient.

Full Definition

Effective dose is the internationally recognised metric for comparing the biological risk of different radiographic examinations. In dental radiology, it allows comparison of exposures from intraoral films, panoramic radiographs, and CBCT scans on a common scale. The unit is the millisievert (mSv); editors must ensure 'mSv' is used rather than 'mGy' (milligray), which measures absorbed dose—a distinct quantity. Effective dose accounts for the varying radiosensitivity of different tissues and organs by applying tissue-weighting factors defined by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). Editorial accuracy in rendering dosimetry units is essential in radiation safety discussions and regulatory submissions.

Usage note: Do not use 'absorbed dose' or 'equivalent dose' interchangeably with 'effective dose.' Confirm units (mSv or µSv) are consistent throughout and appropriately scaled.
