Elongation
A geometric distortion in intraoral radiography in which the image of a tooth appears longer than its true anatomical length, caused by insufficient vertical angulation of the X-ray beam.

Elongation is a projection error occurring when the vertical angle of the X-ray beam is too shallow relative to the bisecting line between the tooth and the image receptor. The resulting image stretches the apparent length of roots and crowns, potentially obscuring periapical anatomy and leading to misinterpretation. It is the opposite of foreshortening and is most commonly associated with the bisecting angle technique when the beam angle is too negative. Editors should ensure elongation is not confused with foreshortening or magnification, which have distinct causes and appearances. The term is used as a standalone noun in radiographic error analysis and is consistently written in lower case.
