Exposure Index

A numerical value assigned by a digital imaging system to indicate the amount of radiation received by the detector during an exposure, used for quality assurance and dose optimisation.

Full Definition

The exposure index (EI) is a standardised metric reported by digital radiographic systems that reflects the X-ray exposure level reaching the image receptor. In dental CBCT and intraoral digital radiography, the EI assists radiographers and quality assurance teams in evaluating whether technique factors are appropriately set — too low an EI indicates underexposure resulting in a noisy image, while too high an EI indicates unnecessary radiation dose. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has standardised EI definitions (IEC 62494-1), and editors of radiology quality assurance documents should ensure the term is used in alignment with this standard. 'Exposure index' should not be conflated with 'effective dose', which represents biological dose equivalent to the patient.

Usage

Usage note: Editors should not use 'exposure index' as a synonym for 'dose'. They are related but distinct quantities. Confirm IEC 62494-1 compliance when editing quality assurance documentation.
