Furcation (Radiographic Assessment)

The radiographic evaluation of bone level at the point where the roots of a multi-rooted tooth diverge (the furcation area), used to classify the severity of furcation involvement in periodontal disease.

Full Definition

Radiographic assessment of furcation involvement examines bone loss at the root bifurcation or trifurcation of multi-rooted teeth. On bitewing and periapical radiographs, furcation bone loss may appear as a radiolucency within the interradicular bone, often described using the Hamp or Lindhe classification (Grade I–III) or the Glickman classification (Class I–IV). Editors must understand that radiographic assessment consistently underestimates the true extent of furcation involvement compared with clinical probing, and reports should acknowledge this limitation. The furcation area itself (the anatomical region) must not be confused with 'furcation involvement' (the pathological condition) or 'furcation entrance' (the clinical measurement) in copy-edited reports.
