Foreshortening

A geometric distortion in intraoral radiography in which a tooth's image appears shorter than its true anatomical length, caused by excessive vertical angulation of the X-ray beam.

Full Definition

Foreshortening occurs when the X-ray beam is directed too steeply downward relative to the bisecting angle of the tooth-receptor assembly, compressing the projected image. It is the counterpart to elongation and is among the most frequently noted projection errors in dental radiology quality assurance reviews. Foreshortening can mask periapical pathology by superimposing root structure and shortening the visible root length. Editors proofreading radiographic technique assessments must distinguish foreshortening from elongation and from cone cutting. The word is written as a single unhyphenated term and is always lower case except at sentence starts.
