Mach Band Effect

A visual perception phenomenon in which the human visual system perceives an apparent radiolucent or radiopaque line at boundaries between areas of different density on a radiographic image.

Full Definition

The Mach band effect is a well-documented psychophysical illusion relevant to dental radiograph interpretation. At the interface between two regions of differing radiographic density—such as the border of a root and the surrounding bone—the eye perceives a bright or dark band that is not actually present in the image data. This can lead to false-positive or false-negative diagnoses; for example, a Mach band at a root apex may be mistaken for a periapical lesion. Editors reviewing radiology reports or educational materials should understand the term and ensure that authors do not conflate the Mach band with true pathological findings. The effect is named after physicist Ernst Mach and should be capitalised accordingly.
