The mandibular canal (also termed the inferior alveolar canal) is a critical anatomical structure in dental radiology, particularly in reports relating to implant planning, third molar surgery, and trauma assessment. It is visualised on panoramic, periapical, and CBCT images as a narrow radiolucent band with well-defined radiopaque superior and inferior cortical borders. Editors must ensure this structure is consistently named — 'mandibular canal' and 'inferior alveolar canal' are accepted synonyms, but the chosen term should be applied uniformly throughout a document. Variation in nomenclature within a single report is a common editorial error in this field.
